SUMMARY:Future-Proofing Skills: Building Stronger Up- and Reskilling Ecosystems in Europe
DESCRIPTION:The recent Draghi report on Europe’s competitiveness highlights significant skill gaps across member states and underscores the urgent need for a more future-proof and competitive European labour force\, particularly in key sectors: The twin transition not only leads to the emergence of new professions in the green and digital sectors\, but also increasingly requires interdisciplinary skillsets\, breaking down silos of traditional education and training courses. The aim of fostering ecosystems for up- and reskilling is therefore high on the EU agenda. While the Pact for Skills has laid the groundwork for industry collaboration\, further action is expected under the second pillar of the Union of Skills. As the EU shapes its vision for skills development\, it can draw valuable lessons from national approaches. This event explored Switzerland’s up- and reskilling system in the broader European context\, showcasing its high adult learning participation rates\, strong private sector involvement\, and emerging work on micro-credentials. Panel discussions compared Swiss and Danish experiences and featured inputs by the institutions\, focusing on building effective ecosystems\, aligning education of the workforce with industry demands\, and ensuring cohesion in European up- and reskilling systems. A particular focus was on how to create ecosystems that deliver future-proof and demand-oriented up- and reskilling pathways\, and how countries can design impactful transformations of their up- and reskilling systems\, while avoiding fragmentation of the European education landscape. Full programme: here \n\n\n\nSummary: here \n\n\n\nPresentation of Bernhard Grämiger (Director of the Swiss Federation of Adult Learning): here

SUMMARY:Innovation Briefing on ‘Igniting the potential of Swiss and European Deep Tech Start-ups & Scale-ups'
DESCRIPTION:This event was jointly organised by the Mission of Switzerland to the EU\, Innovation Norway and SwissCore. \n\n\n\nFormer Italian prime minister Mario Draghi highlighted in his recently published report on the Future of European Competitiveness that the EU must close the innovation gap and unleash its full potential to support breakthrough innovations. A significant challenge for promising companies remains to find capital for larger rounds of investments in Europe. They thus often turn to foreign investors. The European Innovation Council (EIC) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) are working hand-in-hand to address these issues\, but more efforts will be needed to become competitive. \n\n\n\nDuring this event\, we dove into solutions how the EIB – together with the EIC – is addressing the scale-up gap\, we heard from start-ups who went through this “growth journey” and discussed how to build trust among the EIC\, venture capitalists and other institutional investors such as pension funds to crowd-in private investments into R&I. \n\n\n\nProgramme: here \n\n\n\nEvent summary: here \n\n\n\nSlides: here

SUMMARY:International collaboration in higher VET
DESCRIPTION:This event was organised by SwissCore and Norcore\, together with Movetia\, the Swiss Exchange and Mobility Agency\, and HK-dir\, the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills. \n\n\n\nThe higher or continuing VET sector in Europe is often mentioned when we discuss how to adapt the education and training offer to mend the skills gap created by the green transition or by demographic changes in society. By its flexible nature\, these schools are close to the employers\, and cater both to new students as well as to people who work\, and who seek reskilling and upskilling opportunities. However\, we do know that higher VET in Europe is a very heterogenous sector\, and that it can be difficult to carry out joint projects and mobilities across national borders. In Erasmus+\, they struggle in many countries to find their place within the larger categories of vocational education and higher education\, as they may find themselves in between these two levels. \n\n\n\nThe following questions were addressed: What is the higher VET sector? What are the differences and similarities between different national systems? What are the main barriers for international cooperation and in particular in the current Erasmus+ programme\, and what can be done to mediate these? What are the possibilities? \n\n\n\nProgramme: here \n\n\n\nPresentations: OECD Centre for Skills – KATAPULT \n\n\n\nSummary of the conference: SwissCore article

SUMMARY:The Brussels: FutureTalks on VET in Europe
DESCRIPTION:Shaping a more inclusive future of VET in times of transition \n\n\n\n\n\nDLR Projektträger Brussels Representation\, the Mission of Switzerland to the EU and SwissCore\, organised on 12 March 2024 an event titled “The Brussels: FutureTalks on Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Europe: Shaping a more inclusive future of VET in times of transition. \n\n\n\nSince the Osnabrück Declaration at the latest\, Vocational Education and Training (VET) has been high on the agenda of the European Union: The aim is to “develop the European Education and Training Area through future-oriented and innovative education and training systems in order to support the digital and green transition and improve employability and competitiveness and thus stimulate economic growth” (Osnabrück Declaration 2020).Today\, the EU Skills Agenda bundles the efforts to improve the development of VET. Still\, the potential of VET may not yet have been fully utilised\, for example\, to serve the central promise of the SDGs\, “Leave no one behind”. To harness the potential of VET we discussed: \n\n\n\n\nWhat recent learnings and conclusions can be drawn from the involvement of newer EU member states\, e.g. the Baltic states\, as well as third countries\, e.g. Switzerland\, in the development of VET?\n\n\n\nHow and how far does VET contribute to resolving the gender gap in the labour markets (e.g. in STEM subjects) and for a better inclusion of disadvantaged individuals? This event will shed light on the dynamics around international cooperation and inclusion against the backdrop of the digital and green transition and other current developments in VET policy. It will address the challenges ahead:\n\n\n\nHow can VET and technological innovation continue to grow together and become more inclusive?\n\n\n\nHow can the social partners and companies be optimally integrated in the development of VET as far as it is related to the twin transition and to societal change?\n\n\n\nFunding instruments\, such as the Centres of Vocational Excellence\, have generated a strong resonance; what are the upcoming desiderata with regard to future funding initiatives and policy support? As a contribution to the European Year of Skills\, this 8th edition of the Brussels: FutureTalks series will take a future-oriented focus on the main opportunities that are provided by the European and international cooperation in VET: What is needed for a more inclusive and innovative development of VET?\n\n\n\n\nSummary of the event: here

SUMMARY:Swiss Science Briefing
DESCRIPTION:Academic Freedom: an essential value for progress and prosperity \n\n\n\n\n\nAcademic freedom is a basic tenet that underpins scientific progress and encompasses the freedom to pursue research\, teach and study without unreasonable interference. However\, in recent years\, academic freedom is increasingly coming under pressure. \n\n\n\nThis Science Briefing therefore addressed questions such as: What is the state of affairs of academic freedom in Europe and globally? How can science communities contribute to prevent a further erosion of academic freedom? What are the implications on international scientific cooperation involving nations with different value systems? \n\n\n\nFor that purpose\, Martina Caroni Professor at the University of Lucerne and the Swiss Academies’ Delegate for Human Rights\, together with Gosse Vuijk\, Head of Parliamentary Affairs for the Member of the European Parliament Christian Ehler\, provided keynotes. \n\n\n\nThereafter\, a panel discussion followed with Jan Willem Duyvendak\, Director of the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences\, Katrin Kinzelbach\, Professor for International Politics of Human Rights at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität in Erlangen-Nürnberg\, Koen Lemmens\, Professor of Human Rights Law at the KU Leuven and Slaven Misljencevic\, Policy Officer\, DG RTD\, European Commission. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganisers: the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences\, the Swiss National Science Foundation and SwissCore \n\n\n\nProgramme: here \n\n\n\nSummary of the event: here

SUMMARY:Swiss Innovation Briefing
DESCRIPTION:Creative Economies: Creation of innovation and values for a strong Europe \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe role of art and design as an important driver for societal and economic value creation and innovation is more and more recognised at European level. This is evident not least in two recent developments: the establishment of the new EIT Knowledge and Innovation Community for Culture & Creativity\, as well as the New European Bauhaus. Creative economies are paradigmatic for how artistic thinking and processes can be made entrepreneurially and societally productive and lead to new forms of value creation. But what are exactly creative economies and how do they play a role on the European level? Which entrepreneurial strategies do artists and designers pursue? How is value-creation conceived and measured in the creative economies? During this briefing\, Senior representatives from the new EIT Culture & Creativity KIC and the experienced teams from the Zurich Centre for Creative Economies at Zurich University of the Arts\, the u-institut\, Berlin and Tabakalera\, San Sebastián explored these questions and reflected them with MEP Dr. Christian Ehler\, Lisa Lang\, Director Policy & EU Affairs Orchestrator for EIT Climate KIC\, and Mariachiara Esposito\, Policy Officer at the European Commission. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganisers: the Mission of Switzerland to the EU\, the Delegation of the Basque Country to the EU\, and SwissCore \n\n\n\nProgramme: here \n\n\n\nPresentations: here \n\n\n\nSummary of the event: here

SUMMARY:SwissCore Annual Event 2023
DESCRIPTION:Knowledge networks for Europe – Advancing collaboration across borders: COST\, European university alliances and beyond \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nKnowledge networks play a crucial role for education\, research\, and innovation collaboration in Europe. This year’s SwissCore Annual Event focuses on how knowledge networks such as European universities help leveraging and advancing collaboration in education\, research\, and innovation. \n\n\n\nSwissCore’s 2023 Annual Event puts the different dimensions and enabling aspects for thriving networks at the centre of the discussions between decision makers and experts from Switzerland\, the European Union – and the audience. What are the right framework conditions for students\, researchers\, and innovators when it comes to knowledge networks to develop our common European future? An important example of these networks are the COST Actions – and the alliances of higher education institutions under the European Universities Initiative – with one of them\, Una Europa\, at the centre of the keynote speech and the panel discussion. \n\n\n\nMore details can be found in the draft programme. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration can be done upon receipt of a personalised invitation.
