SUMMARY:Innovation Briefing on ‘Igniting the potential of Swiss and European Deep Tech Start-ups & Scale-ups'
DESCRIPTION:This event was jointly organised by the Mission of Switzerland to the EU\, Innovation Norway and SwissCore. \n\n\n\nFormer Italian prime minister Mario Draghi highlighted in his recently published report on the Future of European Competitiveness that the EU must close the innovation gap and unleash its full potential to support breakthrough innovations. A significant challenge for promising companies remains to find capital for larger rounds of investments in Europe. They thus often turn to foreign investors. The European Innovation Council (EIC) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) are working hand-in-hand to address these issues\, but more efforts will be needed to become competitive. \n\n\n\nDuring this event\, we dove into solutions how the EIB – together with the EIC – is addressing the scale-up gap\, we heard from start-ups who went through this “growth journey” and discussed how to build trust among the EIC\, venture capitalists and other institutional investors such as pension funds to crowd-in private investments into R&I. \n\n\n\nProgramme: here \n\n\n\nEvent summary: here \n\n\n\nSlides: here

SUMMARY:Swiss Science Briefing: 'Monitoring causes and consequences of biodiversity change'
DESCRIPTION:This event was organised by the Mission of Switzerland to the European Union\, the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences and SwissCore. \n\n\n\nGlobal biodiversity loss and degradation of ecosystems continue at an alarming speed despite ongoing counter-efforts on the national\, European and international levels. This Science Briefing focused on biodiversity monitoring activities\, and it assessed where future activities are needed. The keynote speech of Prof. Dr. Fischer on ‘Causes and consequences of biodiversity change: monitoring and knowledge gaps’\, was followed by a discussion with panel members of the European Commission\, the European Partnership Biodiversa+\, Europa Biodiversity Observation Network (EuropaBon) and other representatives. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nProgramme: here \n\n\n\nEvent report: here

SUMMARY:Swiss Science Briefing - Research careers in the light of COVID-19 - How can science funders provide support?
DESCRIPTION:SwissCore and the Mission of Switzerland to the EU organised an online Swiss Science Briefing on: ‘Research careers in the light of COVID-19 – How can science funders provide support?’. \nHow did the COVID-19 pandemic affect researcher careers? And how could measures by science funders help mitigate negative effects. \nThis briefing provided a glance at the impact of COVID-19 on young researchers with some first results from the Swiss Career Tracker Cohorts Study\, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). In the subsequent panel\, we elaborated on how an international research funder at EU level like the European Research Council (ERC) and a national funder like the SNSF could react to the crisis with their measures and decisions. The perspective of the young researchers’ community also added to the discussion helping to identify areas where further investigation and action has to take place. Panelists included Prof. Jean-Pierre Bourguignon\, ERC President ad interim\, Prof. Matthias Egger\, President of the National Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation\, as well as Prof. Stéphanie Gauttier\, Chair of the Policy Group of the Marie Curie Alumni Association. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFollow-up of the event: \nProgramme: here \nInformation on the Swiss Career Tracker Cohorts Study: website \nDetailed report: here
