Securing long-term sustainability of Research Infrastructures
The 27 September 2017, the European Commission (EC) published a document looking at the long term sustainability of Research Infrastructures (RI).

This publication follows a long-standing debate with EU Member States and European stakeholders and led to the establishment of a European action plan on the long term sustainability of European RI. Indeed, as stated in the report, RI play an essential role in the scientific discovery process and the production of knowledge for society and industry. In this context, the ‘Commission Staff Working Document on Long-term sustainability of Research Infrastructures’ sets a strong basis for further discussions with stakeholders, Member States and countries associated to the European framework programmes. It outlines different actions to be taken at all levels in Europe to address RI sustainability.

The consultation process with national authorities and European RI stakeholders aimed at triggering a broad pan-European debate on RI longterm sustainability. The resulting Action Plan contains a list of 42 items that promote long-term sustainability from an EC perspective. The items are classified into seven elements:

- Ensuring RI at the forefront of scientific excellence.

- Configuring European RI as skills development and mobility actors.

- Unlocking RI Innovation potential and stimulating industry engagement.

- Boosting RI impact, value and benefits of RI.

- Enhancing RI as the pillar for data production and sharing.

- Ensuring effective governance and sustainable life-cycle management.

- Promoting European RI in the international arena.

The development of this Action Plan will also feed in the discussions on the position of RI in FP9, the European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation after Horizon 2020.

The document will be discussed by the wider community at a Conference organised by the Bulgarian Presidency in spring 2018.

Research, Infrastructures, Sustainabilityhttps://www.swisscore.org/Lists/Public/Article/DispForm.aspx?ID=8812017-09-26T22:00:00ZscArticle{3D271D37-15A5-E711-80CA-005056B7191C}https://www.swisscore.org/Lists/Public/ArticleImages/Europa-bei-nacht_1-1024x768.jpg, https://www.swisscore.org/Lists/Public/ArticleImages/Europa-bei-nacht_1-1024x768.jpg
