Based on the mission given by the EU Treaty, the Research Directorate-General of the European Commission is aiming at:

developing the European Union's policy in the field of RTD and thereby contributing to the international competitiveness of European industry;

coordinating European research activities with those carried out at the level of the Member States;

supporting the Union’s policies in other fields such as environment, health, energy, security etc;

overcoming the barriers hindering the mobility of European scientists;

promoting a better understanding of the role of science in modern societies and stimulate a public debate about research-related issues at European level.
